Fears and Phobias – Storms

We are coming up to another stormy winter. Storms can be a major stress for some of precious pooches!

Here are some tips to help your pets deal with this stressful experience.

  • Keep your pet in a quiet and secure environment away from the windows, for outside dogs the garage or laundry are often good rooms for this. Remove cables, breakables and any dangerous items that your pet could damage or get injured on.
  • If your pet has mild anxiety and gets unsettled, put on some music or the t.v. to muffle the sounds and provide your pet with suitable places to hide.
  • When your pet becomes anxious do not change your behaviour or tone of voice, maintain normal behaviour with your pet.
  • If your pet has extreme anxiety it is a good idea to think ahead and contact us so we can potentially prescribe medications (anti-anxiety remedies such as adaptil or feliway or sedatives), these will usually involve a consultation or discussion with the Veterinarian so give us a call so we can schedule you in.
  • Try to stay at home with your pet if you are able if they have extreme anxiety.
  • If you cannot be home ensure you provide them with water and a long-lasting food such as a bone which can provide some distraction.
  • Ensure your pet’s microchip details are up-to-date through the council and they are wearing a collar and ID tag with an up-to-date phone number.
